What it is

PVP was the first synthetic setting polymer in cosmetics and is still in use today. It dissolves in water and alcohol, dries on the hair to a clear, glossy film and holds the shape. Because that film dissolves again in water, it comes off at the next wash.

That same water solubility is also its weakness. PVP draws moisture from the air; in humid weather the film turns soft and tacky and the hold gives way. For this reason copolymers with vinyl acetate were developed, which respond less sensitively to atmospheric humidity. Anyone finding pure PVP in the list is therefore looking at the classic hold and the classic weak point.

Why

  • Short field corrected: until 10.09.2026 it stated that PVP improves the durability of a perm because the hair absorbs less moisture. That does not apply to pure PVP — the substance is hygroscopic, its film takes up atmospheric moisture and becomes tacky in the process. That is precisely why copolymers with vinyl acetate were developed. The short field now describes the film and the hold in all four languages, without the moisture claim.
  • Why the classification reads “low risk”: PVP is a large, water-soluble molecule. Large polymers do not pass through intact skin; they stay on the outside and are washed off. The application is external, and the contact time ends with the next wash.
  • Film build-up is a care topic and not a safety question. Anyone using a lot of setting product and washing less thoroughly gets a layer on the hair that looks dull and heavy. That depends on washing habits and product combination — the same pattern as with the silicones.
  • The route through the air we breathe remains open. There are old case reports of deposits in the lung following inhaled hairspray, described under the name thesaurosis. Whether this clinical entity exists in that form is disputed among specialists and has not been examined here. What matters for the assessment is that the products in this lexicon are mousse, gel and lotion, not finely atomised sprays.
  • The difference lies with the user. For the client a single application is short; anyone working daily with setting products in a salon has a considerably higher total exposure on the hands and, with spray products, in the air. A 2022 review names exactly this gap: the safety assessment of cosmetics considers the ordinary consumer, not occupational exposure in hairdressing.

When the assessment differs

  • Spray application: inhalation is a route of its own. The assessment assumes mousse, gel and lotion and does not apply to sprays unexamined.
  • Occupational contact: daily use on many heads means a considerably higher total exposure than a single application at home.
  • Humid weather: the film turns soft and tacky. That is not a safety question but in practice the most common reason for dissatisfaction with the hold.
  • Very fine or already weighed-down hair: film formers build up. Amount and washing frequency are the adjustable factors.
  • Known contact allergy to PVP: isolated case reports exist. They are rare, but decisive for the person concerned.

Open questions

  • Concentration in the specific product: not available. High proportions are possible for setting polymers; which one was chosen here is stated nowhere.
  • Molecular weight of the PVP used: not documented. It determines film hardness and solubility and cannot be read from the ingredient list.
  • The route through the air with spray products: not assessed here. The available case reports date from the 1950s and 1960s, are disputed among specialists and were not examined here in the original.
  • Residual monomer from manufacture: not documented and not readable from the ingredient list — the same pattern as with other polymers in this lexicon.
  • Regulatory status: not checked; statements on use and maximum levels are not quoted second-hand.
