What it is

Toluene-2,5-diamine sulphate is one of the most important dye precursors in modern permanent hair colour. It belongs to the developer substances: small molecules that penetrate the swollen hair and react there together with couplers and hydrogen peroxide. Only from that reaction do the actual colour pigments form — they are larger than the starting materials and therefore stay in the hair.

The sequence in time matters for understanding this. What is in the tube is not what ends up in the hair. The reactive starting material is largely used up during the processing time. Attention therefore belongs to the application phase, in which the unreacted substance can touch skin and scalp.

Why

  • Why the classification reads “increased attention”: contact allergies are documented for the group of oxidative developer substances, and a sensitisation once acquired generally persists. That is the reason for the classification — not a finding that a properly performed colour service harms the client.
  • The reactive state is the critical one. Before and during the processing time the substance is present unreacted; afterwards it has largely been converted into larger colour pigments. Care during application, processing and rinsing is therefore not a formality but precisely where exposure is decided.
  • Cross-reactions are a topic of their own here. Anyone sensitised to one substance in this group may also react to related developer substances. Changing brand therefore does not reliably solve the problem; what governs is the substance group, not the product name.
  • The compatibility test before application is where the assessment becomes practical. How it is to be carried out is set out in the manufacturer's instructions; it does not replace medical assessment where an allergy is known.
  • Occupational and client exposure are different questions. The client colours every few weeks; the professional handles the unreacted mixture several times a day. Gloves are the single most effective factor here.

  • Known allergy to hair colour or to substances in this group: the product is then unsuitable for that person. Medical assessment governs here, not a judgement made in the salon.
  • An earlier reaction after colouring, even a mild one: reason to take the compatibility test seriously and, in case of doubt, to seek medical assessment.
  • Broken, irritated or inflamed scalp skin: not a suitable starting point; the manufacturer's instructions take precedence.
  • Use outside the intended product type, for instance on eyelashes or eyebrows: these products are not intended for that and it is expressly not assessed here.
  • Occupational contact without gloves: the most important differing case; repeated skin contact with the unreacted mixture is the constellation from which occupational sensitisation develops.

  • Concentration in the ready-to-use mixture: not available and not readable from the ingredient list.
