What it is
Cetyl alcohol is a fatty alcohol with sixteen carbon atoms and a soft wax at room temperature. In hair care it lies on the fibre surface, smooths it and makes combing easier. In the formulation it makes the emulsion stable and gives it body.
It appears in four products in this lexicon and there mostly alongside cetearyl alcohol — of which it is a component. Anyone seeing both in a list is not seeing a duplication but the fine-tuning of consistency. Here too: “alcohol” in the name denotes a chemical group, not the drying alcohol of everyday speech.

Why
- Why the classification reads “very low risk”: a large, fat-like molecule that is barely soluble in water, stays on the surface and is applied externally. Fatty alcohols of this chain length are among the longest and most widely used auxiliaries in cosmetics.
- The difference from stearyl alcohol is two carbon atoms. The shorter chain makes the substance softer and somewhat easier to spread, the longer one harder and more strongly thickening. Such details determine the texture of a product — on tolerability they have no discernible influence.
- Origin corrected: until 10.09.2026 the short field said “plant-derived (palm/coconut)”. That is one possible route but not the only one. Fatty alcohols are equally produced petrochemically from ethylene, and the ingredient list does not say which raw material was used. The short field now reads “plant-derived or synthetic” in all four languages.
- The conditioning effect comes from deposition, not from penetration. The wax lies on the cuticle layer and makes it smoother — the same basic principle as with the cationic conditioning agents, only without electrical charge and therefore adhering less firmly. That is precisely why both often appear together in a conditioner.
- For advice at the chair this record is above all an all-clear. The question “is there alcohol in it?” can be answered clearly here: yes, chemically speaking — no, in the sense of the concern behind it.
