What it is

Cetearyl alcohol is not a single substance but a mixture of cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol — precisely the two that also appear separately in this lexicon. At room temperature it is a white wax. It gives creams their body, makes conditioners spreadable and keeps an emulsion from separating again.

The name causes the most common misunderstanding in the whole lexicon. “Alcohol” here means only that the molecule carries an OH group. Ethanol, listed as alcohol denat., has two carbon atoms, evaporates and does indeed dry the hair. Cetearyl alcohol has sixteen to eighteen, is solid at room temperature and does not evaporate. Same word ending, opposite behaviour.

Why

  • Why the classification reads “very low risk”: the molecule is large, fat-like and barely soluble in water. It stays on the surface, is applied externally and is predominantly rinsed off again. It is the substance that gives the product its body, not one that is meant to penetrate the skin.
  • The confusion over the name is the actual reason for this record. Anyone seeing “alcohol” in the list and thinking of drying alcohol is mistaken here. Fatty alcohols are waxes; they re-fat rather than de-fat. The substance that really can dry out the hair appears in this lexicon under alcohol denat. and has nothing in common with this one but the word ending.
  • Cetearyl alcohol is the mixture of cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol. In five products in this lexicon all three nevertheless appear side by side in the same ingredient list. That is not a duplication: as a rule it means several raw materials were used — a ready-made blend plus individual alcohols, to adjust the ratio of chain lengths and thereby the consistency. This cannot be read off the list with certainty, but it is the obvious explanation.
  • Origin corrected: until 10.09.2026 the short field said “plant-derived”. Fatty alcohols are produced by two industrial routes — from palm kernel or coconut oil, or petrochemically from ethylene. Which route was chosen for the actual raw material is not stated in the ingredient list. The short field now reads “plant-derived or synthetic” in all four languages.
  • And anyone who takes the plant route to be the better one should look more closely. A life cycle assessment from 2016 compared both routes and found a considerably higher greenhouse gas balance for the palm kernel oil route than for the petrochemical one — the cause being land use change for the plantations. That is an environmental statement, not a health one, but it is a good example of “plant-derived” not automatically meaning “better”.

When the assessment differs

  • Very fine hair: consistency agents build up. Until 10.09.2026 the short field promised a creamy texture “without weighing the hair down” — that addition has been removed, because it does not hold for fine hair.
  • Existing eczema or pre-damaged skin: contact allergies to cetylstearyl alcohol are described, particularly on chronically damaged skin. They are rare, but decisive for the person concerned.
  • Products that stay on the hair: with hair colour and straightening products the contact time does not end with rinsing.
  • Occupational contact: daily use on many heads means a higher total exposure on the hands.
  • Anyone avoiding palm oil for sustainability reasons: the ingredient list does not say which raw material was used. Only the manufacturer can give that information.

Open questions

  • Concentration in the specific product: not available. High proportions are usual for consistency agents.
  • Manufacturing route and ratio of chain lengths in the actual raw material: not documented. Both determine the consistency and cannot be read from the ingredient list.
  • Frequency of contact allergies to cetylstearyl alcohol: not evaluated with figures here.
  • The life cycle assessment named has not been examined here in full text. The direction and reasoning of the result are taken from the summary; exact figures and system boundaries remain subject to reservation.
