Glycerin

What it is

Glycerin is a humectant — a substance that binds and holds water. It occurs in the human body, is a building block of natural fats and is among the longest and most widely used raw materials in cosmetics. In hair products it holds moisture in the hair and in the formulation; alongside this it stops products from drying out.

The effect has a flip side that is rarely discussed: glycerin attracts water from its surroundings — from the air in humid conditions, and possibly from the hair in very dry air. That observation is the source of the widespread claim that glycerin dries out hair in cold weather. It describes a real mechanism but its reach is disputed.

Why

• Why the classification reads “very low risk”: because of external use, the very long history of use and the absence of indications of a relevant irritant or sensitising potential at cosmetic levels. That is a statement about tolerability.
• “Made by the body” is still not a safety argument. That a substance occurs in the body says nothing about its effect in external use at a given amount. The classification rests on application and quantity, not on origin.
• The effect depends on humidity, not only on the product. A humectant binds water from its surroundings. How that plays out in the hair depends on the climate — that is the factual core behind the claim about cold, dry air.
• But that claim comes with a limitation: how strong the effect is in practice and from what concentration it appears is disputed and not backed by data here. The mechanism is plausible; its reach is not automatically so.
• Safety and efficacy stay separate. That the substance is well tolerated says nothing about whether a particular product delivers what it promises. For the classification the first question is what counts.

When the assessment differs

• Very dry, cold ambient air: this is where the mechanism described above is most likely to be noticeable. That concerns the result on the hair, not tolerability.
• Very high concentrations: the classification assumes the amounts usual in hair products. Pure glycerin on the skin behaves differently.
• Broken or badly irritated scalp skin: every substance behaves differently across a disrupted barrier; the classification applies to intact skin.
• Leave-on compared with rinse-off products: longer contact, but no known turning point for the tolerability of this substance.
• Children: not assessed here.

Open questions

• Concentration in the actual product: not available. For the moisture effect described it is the decisive variable.
• Extent of the drying effect at low humidity: not backed by data. The statement above describes the mechanism and expressly marks its reach as disputed.
• Evidence of efficacy for a lasting benefit to the hair: not evaluated here.
