Stearyl Alcohol

What it is

Stearyl alcohol is the longer-chain of the two fatty alcohols that make up cetearyl alcohol: eighteen carbon atoms, a solid white wax at room temperature. It thickens more strongly than cetyl alcohol and gives creams and conditioners their firmness.

It appears in four products in this lexicon and there without exception in the company of other fatty alcohols. That is the rule, not the exception: the consistency of an emulsion is adjusted through the ratio of several chain lengths, not through a single substance.

Why

• Why the classification reads “very low risk”: as with the two related fatty alcohols, a large, fat-like, barely water-soluble molecule that stays on the surface and is applied externally.
• Short field extended: until 10.09.2026 the function read only “fatty alcohol” — that is the substance class, not a function. It now reads “fatty alcohol, consistency agent” in all four languages, as with cetearyl alcohol, and thereby names what the substance does in the product.
• Origin corrected: the short field said “plant-derived”. As with the other two fatty alcohols in this block, two industrial routes are usual, the oleochemical one from palm kernel or coconut oil and the petrochemical one from ethylene. The route cannot be read from the ingredient list; the short field now reads “plant-derived or synthetic”.
• The longer chain is the whole difference. Eighteen instead of sixteen carbon atoms make the substance harder, higher-melting and more strongly thickening. For the formulation that is decisive; for tolerability it has no discernible significance.
• This record too is above all an answer to the confusion over the name. The three fatty alcohols in this block carry the same word ending as alcohol denat. and behave in the opposite way: they are waxes, they do not evaporate, and they do not dry out the hair.

When the assessment differs

• Very fine hair: of the three fatty alcohols in this block, this is the most strongly thickening and the most likely to be noticed on fine hair.
• Existing eczema or pre-damaged skin: contact allergies to cetylstearyl alcohol are described, particularly on chronically damaged skin.
• Products that stay on the hair: in this lexicon the substance also appears in a styling product.
• Occupational contact: daily use on many heads means a higher total exposure on the hands.
• Anyone avoiding palm oil for sustainability reasons: the ingredient list does not say which raw material was used.
